On the initiative of Olivier Gourvil, Professor at the ESAD GV
After minimalism, numerous plastic and pictorial forms clearly assume enormity and excess as salutary impropriety. In his famous essay “Of the essence of laughter” Baudelaire saw the comic as an excess and an extreme, to the point of being grotesque.
Even the term “grotesque” itself should be considered in relation to two major entries: one aesthetic and historical that designates an ornamental type, the other psychological and perceptive in the field of the comic. “The height of art” presents a vast colour chart where ornamental and decorative forms meet those of excess, where organic figures borrow willingly from the body, from its gendered forms, its distortions, and from laughter, “this monstrous phenomenon”.
For contemporary painters, what are the plastic and pictorial forms of excess, deformation and humour today? Don't phenomena of ambiguities, formal fusions, of ornament and décor, of anthropomorphic an organic proliferation – being the marked characteristics of the grotesque – belong today to the domain of images, of screens and systems of communication and not to that of art and painting in particular, even under profoundly different appearances?
In which domains, sometimes outside of painting itself, will painters seek the origins? During these roundtable discussions, we will bring together, using various forms (communication, discussion, exchange) testimonies from artists, critics and historians on these questions.
