MALEREI2020PEINTURE, a european research project, brings together students, former students and teachers from art schools.
Initiated in 2008 by artists Katharina Schmidt (Marseille/Toulouse) and Winfried Virnich Cologne/Mayence), this collaboration between the Mayence and Toulouse schools of art, benefits from the theoretical support of the philosopher Angelica Horn (Frankfurt) and from Art Historian Hervé Sénant (Paris /Toulouse), and from the collaboration of two former students, Lotte Günter (Berlin) and Guillaume Durrieu (Paris).
The common objective aims to determine the current situation of painting, to clarify its conditions and dynamic, but also to determine its future, keeping in mind that from its very beginnings – cave art – painting has always been as much a driving force as a utopian movement directed by society.
By way of its twin character, both speculative and perspective, the consecutive exhibitions of Coblence and then Sigean constitute the culmination of this project. The exhibition at the Ludwig museum of Coblence, renders the results public, for the first time in the emblematic space of the “Deutschherrenhaus”.
A three volume publication has also been announced, and it will contain a visual volume for each of the two exhibitions in addition to a volume of text that includes notably contributions by Angelica Horn, Michel Métayer and Hervé Sénant. This publication will be developed in cooperation with the “Salon-Verlag” publishing house in Cologne.
MALEREI2020PEINTURE has received support from Forschungsförderung der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, (the research promotion section of the Johannes Gutenberg University), Mainz, the Minister for Culture and Communication, the Institut Français and the Franco-German office for youth affairs (Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk).
