Amphitheatre – Open to the public
D'après Caspar David Friedrich is the title given to a group of videos in which Sarkis painted watercolours in water after reproductions of paintings by the German romantic painter.
The analysis of this work that stages the genesis of the artwork provides the opportunity to question the relationships between the act of painting and the act of filming.
It is a matter of showing how to paint based on a model, with Sarkis' gesture, far from being reducible to the theoretical primacy of the intention, combining surface and depth, and engages plasticity and vision.
Christophe Viart is a Professor at the University of Rennes 2 where he is the Director of the department of visual arts. He is in charge of the “l'œuvre et l'image” laboratory of the “Arts: pratiques et poétiques” host team (EA 3208). He has been a member of the National Board of Universities, 18th section, since 2007.
He also teaches general culture to 4th and 5th year students at the regional School of Fine Arts in Rennes. In parallel to his involvement with teaching and doctoral supervision, his research is supported by the articulation of theoretical analysis and practise in artistic experience. They combine different works of publication, communication and coordination of symposiums with the organisation of exhibitions, workshops and seminars with artists.
He leads the “L'actualité de la peinture” (EA 3208 « Arts: pratiques et poétiques », université Rennes 2) research programme, and within this context, has coordinated a number of study days since 2008, before the organisation of an international symposium in 2011.
He is also a member of the team involved in the “Filmer la création artistique” project, approved by the national agency for research in 2008.
He is the author of a number of articles linked to themes of fiction, citation and humour and has also directed a number of different publications including Le Witz. Figures de l'esprit et formes de l'art (Bruxelles, La Lettre volée, 2002) and Filmer l'acte de création , avec G. Mouellic et P.-H. Frangne (Rennes, PUR, 2009).
Based on a practise of appropriation and misappropriation, his artistic activity aims to consider the space of the artwork as a fiction open to the plurality of interpretations. In the context of work dedicated to Moby Dick, he notably published two artist's books: La Gamme et Têtes et queues (Incertain Sens, 2004).
Since 2008, he has been associated with a project of residencies and exhibitions in Europe, entitled Suspended Spaces.
Christophe Viart is a member of the Réseau Peinture, created in 2010 by the ERBA Valence..
